Christmas in August

I received a wonderful package of beads in the mail the other day. I'd left a comment on the Znet Shows blog when they posted about a giveaway and I won!! If you haven't had a chance to see the wonderful beads they carry, hop on over and see all their wonderful bead goodness.  Using my new favorite photo app from Rhonna Designs, here's a picture of what I received ( I'm Charisdesigns on Instagram).

Isn't that amazing? I can't wait to play with all of those lovelies.  Since I missed doing something for
Christmas in July, I decided to pay it forward. Leave a comment below and two different people will receive a pair of Christmas earrings that I made for the Seasons Blog Hop.

Since there's only 135 days until Christmas, we might as well start getting ready :)  I'll pick a winner next Saturday. Please make sure I have a way to contact you by email.

Here's to splashes and dashes of Christmas joy in August...

Everyone's A Winner

Last week I said I would pick a winner from the comments section for two pairs of Christmas earrings. However, since there were only a few comments, and it's never fun at Christmas to have to watch other people open gifts when you don't have one,  I'm going to mail a pair of Christmas earrings to everyone who took the time to say something.

So if Monique, Vera , Louise, Andra, and Gloria would email their full name and address to charisdesigns@hotmail.com, I'll get them in the mail. Obviously, the other three pairs will be different from those pictured, but I hope you'll like them.  Merry Christmas a little early- hope this adds a splash of joy to your day!

Summer Color Surprise Blog Hop

Several weeks ago I signed up for Lisa's Summer Color Surprise hop in the attempt to get more motivated to blog more frequently and spread my little wings.  One of the things I like about these is that you have to work with what you're given and that takes me out of the box.  This is a picture of the gorgeous beads I was sent:

Out of my comfort zone? Definitely! Orange is something that I don't gravitate to at all!! But it got the creative juices going and those crystals are sparkling inspiration in themselves. So, without further ado,
here is what I came up with.

Tribal Elegance

I decided to use bronze Artistic wire in all the pieces I made to kind of tie it together. Several years ago, my DH made a trip to visit some of our staff who were serving in South Africa at the time and he brought me back these colorful little plates- the colors seemed like the perfect backdrop for the next few pictures.
Bronze Beauties

Not much to say about these- the beads caps remind me of the African women with a slightly organic feel.

Flames of Sunset

When I first saw these leaf shaped beads, wasn't sure what direction to go. But after wirewrapping the orange flowers into the antique brass earrings frames, the rest just fell into place!
Not the greatest picture, I know, but I've been in the midst of getting ready for a big baby shower for a dear friend and went to bed last night after getting last minute details done and MUCH to my horror remembered I had forgotten to take pictures, so...   These were a trial run for the final set of pictures and the one type of bead in the assortment that hadn't been used yet. 'Nuff said.

Sunrise Delight
These are, by far and away, my favorites from the whole thing.  The coppery crystals just begged for some wire wrapping and while I was looking for inspiration on my favorite time killer source of inspiration, Pinterest, I came across this pin that gave me my aha! moment.

Thanks so much for stopping by to see all my goodies. If you were one of the five that commented on my Christmas in August post, send me an email with your address so I can get your earrings out to you. Stop on by the rest of the participants for some splashes and dashes of color, creativity and joy!

A Labor of Love...

I blogged earlier that I was one of the lucky winners of beads from Znet Shows. These were the beauties I was given to work with:
And boy! did I have fun. Here are some of the things I made:
Crystal Blue Persuasion

I love, love, love the pairing of the Watercolors sea glass beads and pendants with the Tiaria Chinese crystals. The colors are beautiful and this set got the creative juices flowing.
Autumn Seashells

Aren't those spacers amazing? I used them in a couple of different things, and hoarded  saved some for another project.
Pagoda Wave Pendant

This curved sea glass bead threw me for a loop but I decided to go out of my comfort zone, and I'm rather pleased with the result.

Peridot Crystal Dangles

I've had these hoops from Hobby Lobby for awhile and they paired up nicely with some of these beautiful green crystals.
Fish in the Sea
Kept looking at these great fish beads and the round spacers, and again, a chance to use more of those lovely crystals. I had some matching bicones for little dangles.

And then it was time for more earrings :)
Golden Dangles

Cobalt Blue Shells
Here are more of those dark blue crystals paired with chain and dark blue sea glass seashells.

Green Goodness

Went to go post a picture on Instagram ( come follow me : Charisdesigns) and realized I hadn't included these sweet little green earrings. What's not to love about sea glass and crystal? The color combos are endless.

Crystal Hoopla

It took a little bit of finagling, but I was delighted when I was able to stack the crystals inside the hoops that I bought from my local bead store. As you can tell from the pictures, I'm still loving my Rhonna Designs app.

There's another set in progress but it's being a tad persnickety, so it'll wait for another day. I still have lots of beads left, which is very exciting.  Thank you again, Hope and Znet Shows for letting me play with all the lovelies!

Happy Labor Day! Hope it's filled with splashes and dashes of joy and grace-

How did it get to be October already? The DH and I hit the road for two weeks to visit several ministries that have been birthed out of Dunklin Memorial Church, where we live and work. It was a joy to see dear friends who are now running their own alcohol and drug regeneration programs. I've had a lot of goodbyes during the 26 years we've lived here, and hellos are always a welcome change! We'd hoped to make the trip for the changing of the leaves, but that didn't work out so I guess there's always next year now that we don't have to plan around the girls' school schedule. Being an empty nester has its advantages!

We stopped in South Carolina, and then made a side trip to Forest City, NC where I took was able to take a beading class at Off the Beaded Path where Darlene and Patty made me feel right at home. The very talented Kelly Dale was off on maternity leave, but I was delighted when I heard that familiar voice from all the videos and was able to meet her and her sweet baby boy. Because the DH was waiting patiently out in the car due to a change of schedule I didn't have time to poke around the store, but next time? Yep. It's part of the game plan. Then it was off to Franklin, NC, for a couple of days.

Up in Franklin, NC

Dry Falls
From there we drove to his home town of Bonlee, where we had a lovely couple of days with his brother and wife and went to the church where he  grew up.
Bonlee Baptist Church
Next stop? Virginia. Gorgeous scenery along the way, with wonderful friends waiting for us.

Pilot Mountain
From there we made the circuit back to Florida stopping to see each of our three girls. During some down time, we hung out at Lake Ella in Tallahassee, after I made a stop at Glasswork by Susan. This is her Facebook page link, and it's one of my "have tos" when we get up there. I snagged a few lampwork beads and always love her stained glass pendants and other goodies.
Lake Ella, Tallahassee

After stopping in Gainesville and Orlando, it was home, sweet, home where our cat was elated to have us back. Two weeks is too long, even with a dear neighbor girl watching over her. She( the cat) has developed a medical condition which means that we won't have her around for too much longer. That will be hard.

Someone's happy to have us home!
My other big news?? I AM SO EXCITED!! While we were gone, I got an email inviting me to be part of the Znet Shows design team. I am beyond thrilled!

I'll be part of a couple of blog hops at the end of the month, so stay tuned for those.

Until then, may your October will filled with colorful splashes and dashes of grace and joy

6th Do Over Challenge

Some time ago I signed up for the 6th Do Over Challenge with Jeannie K. Ducik for the first time, and was delighted when I found out I would part of this. The guidelines were as follows: Each of the participants would receive a piece of jewelry that Jeannie made earlier in her career, and must use at least 50% of the Do Over piece in the new design.

Here's the necklace set that I was sent:
All those little seed beads were a little overwhelming because I am not a seed beader. At All. So it was off to my favorite inspiration place, Pinterest. After searching through my boards and some new pins, I came across this:
                                                Bead Cap cones

I couldn't find the original site for this pin, because I would love to give credit to the designer. I love this design and the vibrant use of color. Isn't it beautiful? This became my jumping off point. I knew I wanted to use some original beads and recently discovered that Raina of Havana Beads didn't live all that far from me. I messaged her and was delighted to find that I could go meet her and see her gorgeous beads in person. Her studio is located in the colorful Fish House Art Center. Next time I'm definitely going to set aside more time to explore!

                Picture

I had a lovely time talking to her and seeing not only her beads/focals/creations, but her workspace and some of the projects she was working on. Unfortunately, I didn't take pictures of her beads by themselves but you'll see them in in the design below and in the blog entry tomorrow. After playing with this design several times, here is the final project.

African Leaf
Don't Raina's round ceramic beads pick up the color of the leaf focal nicely? I added a few wood and shell beads in with the seed beads on the right side and found some great horn beads that blended the colors in. I tried repeatedly to make the twist tighter on the one side, but with four strands of wire going through one crimp bead this is where it ended up. If you have any tips on how to keep strands tighter, I'm all ears!

Here's another look:
Thanks, Jeannie for letting me part of this very fun Do Over challenge. Now it's time to head on over and see what the other participants did with their jewelry!

Second Annual Octoberfest Blog Hop

How can it be the end of October already? That means *gulp* that December and the end of the year is much closer than it should be. On a personal note, I actually finished my very first 5K yesterday!! Woohoo! I still have a LONG ways to go because running the whole thing wasn't an option, but it was a fundraiser for a former teacher of my girls who is battling breast cancer. So I used the times I had to walk to pray for her and reminded myself of how blessed I am. I finished, but it wasn't pretty! lol.

My November is going to be very busy with three big jewelry events including (hurray, hurray) a trip to my sister's!! This will be my fourth annual jewelry show there and I love seeing repeat customers who've become friends along the way.

Autumn in Florida means that hopefully we're almost done with hurricane season. Our leaves don't change and we're expecting temperatures to drop to the high 70s this week. However, it also means that Pumpkin Pie Blizzards have arrived at Dairy Queen and there's Pumpkin Pie Spice creamer available at the grocery store :) If you're a pumpkin lover like I am, I have a Pumpkin Goodness board on (you guessed it) Pinterest! I love making pumpkin bread and muffins but may have to try the recipe for this pumpkin buckle sometime soon-
Pumpkin Buckle. The crust rises through the top during baking.
Pumpkin Buckle

If you read my last blog post, you'll know that I recently had a chance to meet Raida of Havana Beads and see/buy some of her lovely beads and focals. While I was there looking for some beads for the 6th Do Over Challenge, I decided to indulge in more for today's blog hop. She had a gorgeous focal ceramic leaf that shouted "Fall";  it became mine :) and soon morphed into this...
Autumn Splendor

Those funky brown spacers were so much fun to wire wrap onto beaten copper circles. I added just a touch of green crystal to bring out the green in the amazing pendant. I haven't decided if I want to add another bigger green crystal at the bottom of the leaf- for right now I like it as it is.

Here's a closer look at the earrings
The fact that they're not perfectly matched adds to the appeal for me- definitely handmade and unique!
And one more look at the necklace by itself.

Autumn Splendor

so here's to fall and all the changes it brings. If you're in or around the Okeechobee area, I'll have a booth at the Craft Fair in the Woods on November 9th and would love for you to stop by and say hello! They don't have a website but here's a link to their Facebook page.

There's a whole lot of other people participating in the Octoberfest Blog Hop so make sure you check out what they've posted too. Thanks again to Rita of Toltec Jewels for hosting this, and may your October end with splashes and dashes of grace and joy!

Jewelry for a Good Cause: Ears to You and 7000 Bracelets of Hope

$

0
It's easy to get caught up in our day to day stuff and focus on the necessary and the busy things of life. However, every once in a while it's nice to take some time to be creative on someone else's behalf. I've had two such opportunities in the past couple of weeks and it's nice to be part of something bigger than yourself.

The first took place in October. Three of my wonderful jewelry students joined me for a couple of hours and we made 50 pairs of earrings for a wonderful organization called Ears to You. This great cause supplies earrings to women who are fighting cancer. The founder, Ruth Crane, is a cancer survivor herself, and wanted to give back to women by brightening up their day with pretties for their ears. There are many ways to support  Ears To You, and you can send in new earrings as well as money. Take a peek at the results:

The next opportunity I had was through the Znet Design Team. If you take a glance to the right of the blog, under Design Team members you'll see my name. How exciting is THAT??  This was my first time participating in a lightning round challenge for 7000 Bracelets for Hope.  The number 7000 represents the amount of rare genetic diseases that affect 1 in 10 people. The bracelets are distributed to the families that are fighting these rare, genetic disesases.

If we chose to participate we got to pick 2 items from the Znet Shows website from the Tiara Chinese crystals, cultured sea glass or glass pearls. I picked the light Sapphire AB crystal rondelles and Light Sapphire 10 mm cultured sea glass rounds which you can see pictured below.. I thought I'd receive one strand of each since we were asked to make one bracelet and mail it in. To my delight, Znet sent me three strands of each. Aren't they pretty?

And here's what I came up with...
7000 Bracelets for Hope
In her email, Hope, who oversees the Znet social media, encouraged us to use designs that were a one fit all, so I did two on memory wire and two as stretchy bracelets. My mom had sent me the big chunky beads and they were perfect for the last bracelet. I used other beads from my stash and had a ball making these. Hope had also encouraged us to write a note with the bracelets and I was a little apprehensive. After all, what do you write to someone you've never met dealing with something you've no clue about? But after taking a deep breath and saying a prayer or two, I found something unique to say with each bracelet. I hope that it encourages and brings joy to each of the recipients.

One more look:
After these were in the mail, I realized I needed to make one more. My nephew, Josiah, has Spinal Muscular Atrophy and is wheelchair bound. He's an adorable, funny, bright, articulate kid who I've only had the pleasure to meet a couple of times since they live on the opposite side of the country. My brother and sister in law are his caretakers and I cannot begin to imagine the energy, time, and sacrifice it takes on their part- especially with two other children, including a very active toddler. So, when I get back from Texas ( more about that in another post) I'll be using more of these gorgeous beads to make one for my sister in law- or maybe two, for my oldest niece too!

Thanks, Hope and the Znet team for letting me be part of this opportunity. Two great causes- two great ways to get involved in spreading a little splash of joy and a dash of hope....

Lampwork and Clay Blog Hop

$

Time for another blog hop. I love participating in these because a) it keeps me busy, b) it keeps me challenged and c) it's just plain fun! This one is hosted by Lisa Lodge of Pine Ridge Treasures. We signed up some time ago and had our choice of either lampwork or clay beads to play with. I chose lampwork and was sent beautiful little beads by Lisa Anderson, in purple no less, which is always a delight to play with. I've been so busy getting ready for craft shows and jewelry parties ( I'm in Texas with my sister right now for an annual one) that I forgot about this until last week and went into panic mode.

**Deep breath** Then I came across a tutorial that I'd purchased off the Bead Style site some time ago that used coiling, and since I like to tackle new things with a blog hop, decided to give it a whirl ( pardon the pun). The tutorial, Razzle-dazzle Bracelet, is by Carolyn Conley, and while she used her own large lampwork beads in hers, I just decided to scale it down some and see how it worked.  I've done a little bit of coiling before but hers called for long pieces and while I love my Coiling Gizmo, it really only works well for coils up to about 7 inches. So, grabbing a thin knitting needle, I transferred the coil onto it and completed it there. It's not nearly as tight and looks slightly wonky, but at least it worked! I then fed it onto 18 gauge copper wire and recoiled it before adding a wrapped loop on each end and adding Swarovski lovelies for sparkle and shine.
Here's a look at the final product:

I need to oxidize it so the copper isn't so shiny but since my plane leaves in a couple of hours that will have to wait. Isn't it pretty? Love how the copper makes the purple lampwork the star of the show. I have two more beads left and am figuring out how to use the left over coils for earrings. If you're an Instagram person, I'd love for you to follow me on there. My user name is CharisDesigns. I've also joined the interesting world of Twitter, and am trying to figure out the ins and outs of that. I don't tweet very often, but enjoy following people and seeing things they're posting. Over there you can find me @CharisDJewelry.

Here's the list for the other blog hop peeps. Thanks again, Lisa, for hosting another hop. I'm off to play with my sister- that will fill my day with dashes, splashes and buckets of grace and joy!

.ABS Ornament Blog Hop: It's a Narnia Kind of Thing..

This is my second year participating in the ABS Ornament Blog Hop hosted by Heather Powers of Humble Beads.  When pondering the possibilities, I fell in love  Heather's Woodland Evergreen holiday pendant, and immediately thought of one of my favorite books, The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe. C.S. Lewis is a favorite author of mine, and I've read the series ( as well as many other books of his) numerous times. While it's an entertaining read, he weaves all sorts of wonderful truths into the story and it becomes a lovely allegory. With that in mind, and loving the annealed steel wire that others have recommended, here's what I came up with:
Into Narnia

If you're a Narnia kind of person, there's a few little things built into this. The dark wire reminded immediately of the lamppost that Lucy sees upon entering. Wrapped inside the first bundle is a crystal to emulate said lamppost. There are four beads- two lava blue ones for Edmund and Peter in the main body of the ornament, and two crystal ones for Lucy and Susan. If you've read through the series ( I won't spoil it for you) you could see also where the wrapped crystal bead represents Susan, and the big, clear crystal symbolizes Lucy. It needed a little texture, and I couldn't find anything that seemed to go with it, until  spotting the raffia.  It was an aha! moment when I knew it would represent Aslan's mane.

Here's another view:
This isn't the greatest picture, but it's hanging on my new topiary ( gotta love Pinterest) that I've been dying to make and finally got done yesterday :) By now you know that I also love Rhonna Designs, so a shout out to her wonderful picture app.

One final peek:
Here's a couple of favorite quotes about Aslan:

"Safe?” said Mr. Beaver; “don’t you hear what Mrs. Beaver tells you? Who said anything about safe? ‘Course he isn’t safe. But he’s good. He’s the King, I tell you.”

“Wrong will be right, when Aslan comes in sight,
At the sound of his roar, sorrows will be no more,
When he bares his teeth, winter meets its death,
And when he shakes his mane, we shall have spring again.”
C.S. Lewis, The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe

Here's wishing you and yours a Merry Christmas, the wonder of Narnia, an encounter with the Son of the Emperor, and a season filled with joy and grace.

As you may recall, back in September I was invited to join the ZNet Shows Design Team. I shared one post where I participated in a lightning round challenge for 7000 Bracelets for Hope, which was a lot of fun. We were also asked at the time if we'd like to be part of the Winter edition of Creative Spark which would feature pearls. I was on board with that! Well, it's out now, and chock full of beautiful designs as well as a couple of tutorials. It's a honor to be part of it ( you can find me starting on page 47, and then at the back). Merry Christmas to me!! Click on the image below to see all the lovelies ( I'm jumping up and down right now because I figured out how to insert HTML to make it work). Hope did an amazing job of putting this all together, so a big shout to her.

My Word for the Year

$

Last year we were challenged to take some time and think about what would be our word for the new year.  My word was "breathe" and I blogged about it here. It turned out to be a very appropriate word. I learned to breathe through some new health issues that hung around much longer than desired, through having a storm delay our youngest daughter's high school graduation for a whole day, through finding out that sleep apnea and now means a CPAP machine is a regular part of life, through learning how to be an empty nester, and finally having to put our sweet kitty to sleep the day after Christmas. I am counting my blessings, though, because so many have had to deal with so much more.

This year, my word is "soak". I looked up the definition which includes to lie in, and become permeated or saturated with liquid; to take a long bath; to steep, as for the purpose of softening or freshening; or to draw in. I'm not a big tub person, but every once in a while I take a long, soaking bath. It brings rest, refreshment, and quiets my body and soul. God is slowing me down this year with some changes in my schedule, and my heart is to soak in His presence. I want to absorb His love, His peace, His joy, and His creativity so that I am permeated. Isaiah 30:15 says “In returning and rest you shall be saved; In quietness and confidence shall be your strength.”. I'm ready for some soaking time.

What's your word for the year? I'd love to hear what you've chosen and why.

Before I go, here's a collage of pictures of our sweet kitty, Jade. She was part of our life for almost 15 years and I'm glad we had one last Christmas with her.

So, here's to 2014 and a New Year that waits with wonderful possibilities, and one hopefully full of dashes of grace and splashes of joy!

Into The Forest Blog Hop

It's time for another blog hop hosted by Lisa Lodge- this time the theme is Into The Forest. I was given a combination of beige/tan stone beads, green crystal and some crystals in beige colors. Unfortunately, yours truly forgot to take a picture of all but the green ones-sorry about that!

 Aren't they pretty?

I've been loving playing with brass lately, so when I saw these three beads, I realized they line up perfectly for a chain pendant... and I was right :) Making a chain tassel is always fun too. The brass bowl is from India, where I grew up, and it seemed fitting to photograph the necklace with it, being that this piece reminded me of necklaces from there. I called this pendant "Aranya" which is the Hindi word for forest, in honor of the hop.
Aranya

Here's another look- it's pretty long, but I'm pleased with it.

I still had the tan and brown stones to work with, and while I was in Michaels I spotted some Art-i-cake chain, and fell in love with it. The combination of antique brass and crystal spacers kept calling my name, and upon arriving home, realized it could pair perfectly with the beads Lisa had sent. After figuring how to wrangle them with some antique brass wire, voila! Loving the combo of the sparkly, the chain and the beads.
Woodsy Glam

There are still a couple of links which will become earrings very soon, and it needs a clasp which will also happen this week. What about those pretty green beads, you ask? Well, there are plans for them as well, but last weekend I was given an opportunity to put some earrings into a prom dress shop, and that took up a lot more time than I expected, but very welcomed! They were delivered yesterday, so now I can (literally) wrap up some loose ends.

There's a lot more jewelry peeps who participated in this blog hop, so be sure to check them out.  Thanks again, Lisa, for being a wonderful hostess. Hope your weekend is filled with splashes of grace and dashes of joy!

Grow Your Blog Party & Giveaway

Welcome to the Grow Your Blog Party! Someone had posted about this on a beading Facebook page, and I couldn't pass up the opportunity. Thank you to Vicki for being a wonderful hostess. If you look at the amazing list on her blog, you'll find it's grouped according to the number of followers so be sure to visit and follow the ones that pique your interest.

My name is Christie. I'm a wife of 26 years, a mom to three beautiful daughters and experiencing my first year as an empty nester. I'm finding it has its pros and cons for sure! I've always loved to do crafts and was into scrapbooking for awhile until I was introduced to beading through a friend of my sister. I was hooked! After making gifts for family and friends, this hobby segued into a small business and keeps on going. A couple of years ago I had the privilege of teaching jewelry lessons at a large craft store and that was a wonderful experience. Now I teach private lessons in the small town I live near, and my regulars have become family. They continue to want to learn new things and push me to keep expanding my repertoire- it's a win/win situation!

I'm an avid pinner and have lots of great boards- especially jewelry related things. You can check them out here on Pinterest. I'm also on Instagram where my user name is CharisDesigns. Twiiter is something I'm still trying to figure out but you can follow me as @CharisDJewelry.  I have a shop on Etsy as well as a Facebook business page, Charis Designs

Here's some pictures of  some favorite jewelry I've made:
Merry Mermain

Consider the Lilies

Autumn Splendor

Floral Fantasy

Smokey Mountains

and my absolute favorite....
Orchid Beauty

Several of these were pieces that I made for blog hops, which I love participating in. Autumn Splendor and Orchid Beauty are still for sale- please contact me if you're interested.

With Valentines' Day around the corner, how about a giveaway of some Valentine earrings? Just leave a comment below ( with a valid email) and tell me something special you'll do for your valentine this year (family friendly please!).  Of course, I'm always looking for new followers too ;) I'll pick a random winner on February 1st.

Lots of other blogs to visit, so off I go- hoping your day is filled with splashes of grace and dashes of joy

My Apologies... and the winner is....

I owe you all an apology. I promised to pick a winner on February 1st, and then realized that Vicki had asked that the giveaways be posted on February 15, so decided to honor the hostess and wait. And forgot. And now it's the 19th and I'm just now following through. So, without further ado, doing a random number drawing from the comments, the winner is Cindy from Life on Print. If you'll email me your information, some heart earrings will be on their way to you.

Again, please accept my apologies for not following through in a timely matter. If you come back on Saturday, I'll be posting for a new blog hop that's all about sparkle!

May your week be filled with splashes and dashes of joy and grace,

Christie

Winter Sparkle Blog Hop

It's time once again for another of Lisa Lodge's blog hops. This time the theme was Winter Sparkle and we were given all sorts of wonderful sparklies to work with. Once again, I forgot to take a picture of the goodies before I started working with them. Sigh. My combination was beautiful shades of pink and clear crystals in various shapes and sizes and lots of little glass pearls. As soon as I pulled them out to work on the project, I realized they would pair perfectly with a lovely pendant made from a porcelain shard I had bought from Glassworks by Susan in Tallahassee. And I was right :)
Springing Forth
I added a few green crystals I had from my stash and am loving the end result. The toggle is meant to represent the sun which causes the flowers to spring forth, which I'm sure many of you in snow country are ready for!

But more crystals and those little glass pearls were left and were waiting to be used. A co-worker suggested a pair of dangle earrings and it was a great suggestion.
Pink Delight

While the two don't match exactly, they're definitely complimentary

Thanks, Lisa, for another fun hop.  Here's the rest of the blog hop- time to get busy!

Patina Blog Hop

One of the reasons I sign up for blog hops is to push myself out of my comfort zone and tackle new things that I've resisted because a) I know nothing about the technique or item b) I haven't made time to learn c) I'm afraid I'm going to fail or d) all of the above. Am I alone in this? Somehow, I don't think so. When Kathy Lindemer of Bay Moon Designs threw out a challenge on the Bead Soup Cafe page on Facebook about playing with patinas it was a no brainer, and much to my delight, I was one of 9 participants. She sent the Vintaj Natural Brass Compass and it sat untouched for quite a while. Then Lisa Liddy of Metal Me This offered some odds and ends patinas on sale which would work perfectly for this project.

Here's a picture that I borrowed from Kathy of the component she sent:
Vintaj Natural Brass Compass
Here's a picture of the patinas that Lisa sent my way- aren't the colors pretty?

So it was time to play with the compass. Lisa had graciously given me a few hints and instructions and after much pondering, I decided to go with the rose and burgundy colors. They were easy to use- and I did practice on some irregular Vintaj Big Kick pieces that I'd made previously.

I also wanted to make some links that would complement the dark metal so pulled out Cindy Wimmer's book The Missing Link and grabbed some annealed steel wire from a local hardware store and went to work, and voila! Another fear tackled.

And last, but not least, the final result...Unfortunately when I used my two hole punch similar to this, even after much adjusting, the hole was, well, slightly off center.  Sigh.  Originally I was going to title this Due North. Great name, right? Had to amend it.
Almost Due North
With some pretty purple crystals to complement the patinas, the necklace is almost complete.
Almost Due North take 2

I still need to make a clasp, but love how it all came together ( minus the wonky hole). Thanks, Kathy for a chance to play with something new. It may be my first time using color, but it won't be the last!

Hope you have a great weekend filled with dashes of grace and splashes of joy. I'm off to our 52nd Dunklin Homecoming celebration and can't wait to see some dear faces, hug some necks and hear what God has been doing in the lives of our graduates.

Journey with Gina Fundraiser Bracelet

One of my very dearest friend's sister was recently diagnosed with cancer. What a nasty disease it is. She's just started chemo and has been out of work since January. It's hard to know what to do in a situation like this. and so I began to pray for something I could do to help out. I had just made an adjustable bracelet from a kit I had ordered from UnkamenSupplies and loved the concept. Then inspiration hit! We live in a small, rural community that is known for their generous and giving hearts. There's rarely a weekend where there isn't a fundraiser of some kind being held for someone in need and people rally around those needing help. I've eaten my fair share of BBQ and chicken dinners to aid various causes, so figured something more tangible would also be well received. After messaging Ralph for permission, which he graciously granted, the Journey with Gina bracelet was born. She's a die hard Miami Dolphins fan so there had to be a dolphin and a tribute to one of the team colors.  I worked with her sister to choose the other charms and the colors are a few of her favorites.
. She knew nothing about this. With the help of another dear friend of hers, we pre-sold the first 15 bracelets for $20 each, with all the profits going directly to her. It was such a blessing to be able to show it to her and tell her that her sister got the very first one, and had helped in the planning of it.

I had prayed that we could sell at least 50- and thought that was thinking big. But my,oh my! I'm on my third re-order of supplies and we're close, if not over, the 100 sales mark. I'm going to post this in my Etsy store as soon as I get caught up with orders- not sure when that will be as they keep coming in. It comes with a card that contains a Bible verse chosen specifically for her, and a thank you for choosing to go on this journey with her.

So here's a shout out to this wonderful community of Okeechobee- the small town with a very big heart!!! If you're interested in ordering one of these bracelets, you can leave a comment on the blog below and once I catch up on the orders already placed, we'll send you one (s/h $2.50 each).

The response and support for Gina sure added a huge dash of joy and splash of grace to my day- and hers!

The Color of Dreams Blog Hop

Sometime ago, Rita of Toltec Jewels posted a blog challenge in the Bead Soup Cafe on Facebook ( great group if you're a beader) asking who would be interested in using a single bead by artist Patricia Handschoh of The Color of Dreams Boutique. She also has a blog.  I wasn't familiar with her work, but the colors... oh my. Beautiful. I signed on very quickly and was delighted to be chosen.

Then my bead arrived in the mail....

and I was smitten.  Love, love. love the butterfly.  Here's a closer look.

The pondering began. I like to try new things when I participate in a blog like this and decided to do something with wire.  I doodled a couple of things which didn't work and so decided to devote the beginning of the week to spend time just working on this project. But the best laid plans of mice and men...

A dear friend had asked me to be with her during her labor and delivery with her first baby. As a former L/D nurse, I was delighted to say yes. She called me Monday and said they were going to be inducing her that evening and could I be there. Yes, ma'am. Absolutely. Long story short, Miss Annie  decided not to make her debut until Tuesday evening. Being back in the labor room reminded me of everything I loved about being an L/D nurse (being a support person and helping a woman believe in what she and her body were created to do) and everything I didn't (watching her RN and CNM having to split their time between rooms and oh, that time consuming charting over and over). When she arrived, her daddy and mommy were elated and exhausted. I got back to thinking about pursuing a certification as a doula. But that's another story. Had to work the next couple of days and then it was Friday :)

Got out my go to wire of late ( annealed steel wire from Ace Hardware) and started playing. And re-doing. And again. And then?

Birth of a Butterfly

It's not perfect by any stretch of the imagination, and my hat is off to wireworkers extraordinaire, because this was attempt #4? and I finally just had to commit to finishing something in time. It's still lacking a chain but overall, I'm pleased with the end result. Getting those loops somewhat equal was the biggest challenge - I need a hands on class somewhere in the future. Like the process of this pendant, births aren't always pretty and don't always go as planned, but in the end if you have a sweet little healthy person in the world, there's cause for rejoicing and celebration. Hence, the name.

Here's another look.
Don't forget to stop by and see what the other participants created using their beads. A big shout out to Rita for being a generous and wonderful hostess.  As for me? I'm wishing you splashes of joy and dashes of grace in whatever your day holds.

7th Do Over Challenge

I was delighted to be able to participate in Jeannie Dukic's 7th Do Over Challenge. This is my second time being able to play with an old piece of her jewelry. Jeannie states the challenge as this:  "I will send you an old, tried, boring piece of my jewelry for free and you will repurpose into something beautiful and amazing."  All we pay for is the shipping and handling. You must use at least 50% of the original piece in the new creation.

Without further ado, here is the piece that I was sent.
Butterfly by Jeannie Dukic
I love the vibrant colors and how colored the butterfly, but was unsure as how to proceed. Finally, I took a deep breath and dissected the piece and found different lengths of chain and beautiful, colorful crystals. Then the search was on for a focal and a design. Nothing seemed to work.  At all. Couldn't find anything that matched the colors properly. And then- voila! Hidden away in a drawer I found a painted shell pendant and when I put the crystals next to it, I heard music! ( Okay, not really, but I was delighted) I kept the design fairly simple so that those gorgeous colors would pop.

After playing around with some different variations, the last thing to figure out was how to attach the pendant to the chain. I was stumped. Then came Cindy Wimmer'sThe Missing Link to the rescue. While this link wasn't intended to be used as a bail, it added something different to the piece and I love it! I named the piece Hanami, which is the Japanese cherry blossom festival, and what this reminds me of.

Hanami

Here's a closer view of the Lightbulb link I used for the bail

And then, because there were some left over crystals, I used some of the chain to make a pair of earrings, so here's a picture of the whole set.

Hanami set
Thanks, Jeannie, for a chance to be part of this. This set is staying with me and will be worn Easter morning.

Stop on by the other participants and see how they transformed Jeannie's jewelry. Here's wishing you a wonderful Easter filled with the joy of Christ's resurrection and sprinkled with splashes and dashes of His amazing joy and grace!
